Meanwhile, calls grew for India to impose a nationwide lockdown as new coronavirus cases and deaths held close to record highs on Monday, increasing pressure on the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The 366,161 new infections and 3,754 deaths reported by the Indian health ministry were off a little from recent peaks, taking India's tally to 22.66 million with 246,116 deaths.
Earlier, on Saturday, Bangladesh detected its first cases of the highly infectious coronavirus variant first identified in India prompting authorities to extend the closure of the land border with its neighbor for two more weeks.
The confirmation raises fresh worries for Bangladesh as people in droves, in defiance of health norms, are desperately leaving the major cities, especially Dhaka, for their native villages to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.
Bangladesh registered 56 deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours until Sunday morning, taking the total number of fatalities to 11,934.
The country's total number of cases also climbed to 773,513, with 1,386 people testing positive over the same period.
