The Islamist group’s actions contradict their words, the prime minister says
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said Hefazat-e-Islam are a disgrace to the name of Islam, after the islamic group’s Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque was caught at a resort with a woman he identified as his second wife.
The premier made the remark while delivering the concluding speech in the 12th session of the 11th parliament that was prorogued on Sunday.
Addressing the series of violent protests carried out by Hefazat across the country, she said: “I don't want to say what their [Hefazat, Mamunul] character is but you saw it for yourself yesterday [Saturday]. They get caught doing unholy deeds while talking about religion and sanctity.
“Hefazat’s Joint Secretary General Mamunul was caught red-handed with a woman at a Sonargaon resort yesterday [Saturday]. Now they [Hefazat] are trying everything to cover this up. He [Mamunul] introduced a woman who is a beauty parlour worker as his second wife.
"Later, while talking to his original wife, he [Mamunul] said that in the context of the situation," the prime minister added.
“He [Mamunul] went to a resort to have some fun with a beautiful woman right after committing all the carnage. They are a disgrace to the name of Islam. They are belittling Islam,” she added.
She questioned how anyone who has faith in Islam can tell a lie. "So, what religion will they follow and what will they teach the people?" the prime minister said.
Sheikh Hasina said the names of militants, terrorists, and the characterless are now linked with Islam because of the activities of a few people.
"They are just contaminating Islam, the religion of peace," she said.
She urged other leaders of Hefazat to “try to understand what kind of leadership they have.”
