Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader Tuesday said the country's people have complete trust and confidence in the Search Committee formed to constitute a new Election Commission (EC). "The Search Committee has been formed following constitutional procedure and proper process of law for formation of the Election Commission (EC)," he said in a statement.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been intentionally making negative and misleading remarks about the Search Committee. "We understand the BNP's inner ache. The BNP, which has failed miserably in the field of politics, is now involved in a failed attempt to measure the peoples' expectations on the basis of its own frustration and despair," he said.
The AL general secretary said all members of the Search Committee are well-established in their respective fields and each of them is making significant contributions to the national life. In addition to their professional works, he said, they have gained a distinct identity through their works, while their love and responsibility towards the nation are unquestionable.
As per the law, Quader said the Search Committee has been formed with the patriotic dignitaries who performed their constitutional responsibilities and the people have complete trust in the committee.
He said the Search Committee has already sought proposals from all the registered political parties aiming to constitute an independent and neutral EC and it expressed firm commitment to form an acceptable and strong EC based on the proposals of all. People expect that the search committee's pledge in forming a strong EC will be implemented, he added.
The road transport minister said the nationalist spirit that rose through the long liberation struggle under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was halted by the conspiracy of the murderers Zia-Mushtaq clique. And the advancement of non-communal democratic progressive Bangladesh was also stalled.
He said the BNP had started its journey with a vow to assume state power illegally and protecting the interest of the killers and anti-liberation forces. Quader said the path of BNP's politics kept rotating around the expectations and aspirations of the anti-state, anti-liberation forces and conspirators, while the party is still involved in ill-politics of patronising autocrats, terrorists, militancy and war criminals, and preserving their interests.
"The word peoples' expectation does not suit in their (BNP leaders) lips," he added. Blaming BNP for practicing politics to protect its own and vested quarters' interest, the AL general secretary said instead of participating in elections, BNP is involved in an intrigue to make those questionable. He urged the BNP leaders to practice democratic norms by avoiding its wrong policy of boycotting polls.
