A mild cold wave is sweeping over the northern region and some other parts of the country today. Dense fog and cold weather have gripped the eight districts of Rangpur division and five other districts -- Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogura, Naogaon and Kushtia today.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), it recorded the country's lowest temperature at 8.3 degrees Celsius in Panchagarh's Tetulia this morning.
Meanwhile, Dhaka saw a lot of 13.6 degrees Celsius this morning.
In its weather bulletin for the 24 hours commencing 9:00am today, the BMD said night temperature may rise slightly, and day temperature may rise by 1-3 degrees Celsius over the western part and remain nearly unchanged elsewhere over the country.
During this period, moderate to dense fog may occur over the country during midnight to morning and it may continue at some places till noon.
Air navigation, inland river transport and road communication may be disrupted temporarily due to dense fog, it said.
Also, cold weather may persist at some places during daytime because of dense fog, it added.
In Panchagarh, Jitendranath Ray, assistant officer of the local weather observatory centre, said that the icy wind from the Himalayan side is sweeping through the northern districts due to the almost clear skies, amplifying the biting cold.
The weather is expected to remain similar for the next few days in these areas, the official added.
The highest temperature in Panchagarh was recorded at 20.4 degrees Celsius yesterday while it was 15.2 degree Celsius on Wednesday.
According to the meteorological department, temperatures between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius is considered a mild cold wave, six to eight degrees Celsius a moderate cold wave, and less than six degrees Celsius a severe cold wave.
Md Saifuddin, 50, a rickshaw van puller of Panchagarh municipality said though the sun has appeared from the morning, but it is tough to stay outside due to the cooler wind.
Dinesh Barman, 48, a farm labourer of Bathina village in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, said, "We work in the potato field even though there is the severity of cold weather."
"As the speed of the wind flow increased from last evening, the severity of cold increased," he added.
Rakibul Alam, resident medical officer of Thakurgaon 250-bed Modern Hospital, said that around 200 children affected with cold-related diseases have been staying for the last few days in the hospital's children's ward.
He also said that on an average, six hundred patients take treatment, staying at the hospital regularly during the season while the number in the outdoors is much higher.
The district administrations of Thakurgaon and Panchagarh along with nongovernmental initiatives are distributing warm clothes among the cold-hit people.
Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Israt Farzana said they are distributing warm clothes among the disadvantaged people in the district from government sources and urged those solvent to come forward to help the cold-stricken people.
