Passengers will have to pay Tk5 for every kilometre travelled via the country’s first-ever metro rail. Besides, the minimum fare has been set at Tk20, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader announced while addressing the press after inaugurating the Metrorail Exhibition and Information Centre in Diabari, Uttara on Tuesday.
The establishment will allow the netizens to familiarise themselves with how the metro rail operates and its functions, added Quader.
Freedom fighters, people with special needs and students will be able to enter for free by showing their IDs while others will have to pay Tk10 to visit the centre.
As per the fixed fare rate, an MRT-06 ride (from Uttara to Agargaon), expected to be opened for use in December, will cost Tk60.
Whereas, the entire 20.1km one-way travel from Uttara to Motijheel will cost Tk100.
The minister said, “Wounded freedom fighters will be able to travel on the metro train for free.
“Also, those who are especially challenged will be charged less.”
The government has set a December deadline to inaugurate the metro train service from Uttara to Agargaon. The remaining stretch of the metro -- from Agargaon to Motijheel -- will be unveiled next year.
Bangladesh’s first metro rail on a 20.1km-route from Uttara to Motijheel became completely visible on 22 January after the installation of the last girder of the viaduct.
The original length of the metro rail route was 20.1km from Uttara to Motijheel, but it has now been extended by 1.16km to Kamalapur Railway Station.
