The country saw an alarming growth in the number of Covid-19 cases on Tuesday as 3,554 people were diagnosed with the disease in 24 hours.
Almost 8 months ago on 2 July 2020, the country saw the highest cases in a single day when it saw 4,019 cases.
The country also recorded 18 fresh deaths from the pandemic between Monday and Tuesday morning, taking the national death toll to 8,738, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a press release.
Meanwhile, a total of 25,954 samples were tested in government and private testing facilities in 24 hours – the highest number of samples tested in a single day since Covid-19 broke out in the country on March 8, 2020.
With the latest development, the daily infection rate also climbed up to 13.69 per cent. The last time daily infection rate was higher than this was on December 7 with 15.30 per cent of those tested getting positive results. The country had seen an infection rate of 11.19pc Monday.
So far, 577,241 people have been infected by the novel coronavirus in Bangladesh, and the death toll now stands at 8,738. The death rate is 1.52pc.
So far 6,607 men fell victim to the viral disease in the country while the number is 2,131 in the case of women.
In the last 24 hours, 1,835 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 525,994 with a 91.12 percent recovery rate.
Among the latest day’s victims, 12 were men and six were women. Of them, 17 patients died in different hospitals across the country while one at home.
Moreover, 14 of them hailed from Dhaka, three from Chattogram, and one from Rangpur division.
Meanwhile, 25,954 samples were tested in 219 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 44,60,184 samples have been tested in the country so far.
Currently, 10,226 people are in isolation and 33,692 are quarantined. Also, more than 6.3 million people registered around the country to get the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine till Tuesday afternoon, said the health directorate.
Until Monday, over 4.9 million people have been vaccinated nationwide since January 27.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China’s Wuhan city in late December 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The country’s first Covid-19 case was reported on March 8 last year and the first death from the virus was reported on March 18.
Neighboring India yesterday reported 40,715 infections of Covid-19, 10,731 active cases 29,785 recoveries and 199 deaths in the last 24 hours, data from the Union ministry of health and family welfare showed on Tuesday. The country’s coronavirus tally stands at 11,686,796, active cases at 345,377, recoveries at 11,181,253, and the death toll at 160,166 so far.
As of Tuesday, the number of Covid-19 infected people has risen to 124,338,690 worldwide and the fatalities now stand at 2,736,721, according to Worldometer.
