Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that the government is planning to form a separate 'Cyber Police Unit' considering the current context to combat cyber crime.
The Prime Minister said this in response to a written question by Faridunnahar Laili, a Member of Parliament for the reserved women's seat, during a question and answer session in the National Assembly on Wednesday (June 5).
The Prime Minister said, 'A special clique, especially the communal clique, the war criminal clique and the BNP-Jamaat are constantly spreading rumors on social media. A large part of them are located in different countries of the developed world. They are mainly spreading false and distorted news against Bangladesh and the current government on social media like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube.
He said, '24/7 cyber patrolling has been strengthened to prevent anti-government and anti-state propaganda, communal incitement and rumors using social media; Appropriate legal action is being taken after identifying the rumor mongers. Awareness campaign has been continued through various social media. Information about the rumor is being collected and the concerned authorities are being informed to take necessary action.'
Sheikh Hasina said, 'According to the information received regarding the rumors through National Emergency Service 999 and Cyber Support Helpline, legal action is being taken. Subject to specific complaints and evidence, with the help of Interpol, the people behind the rumours, located abroad, are being identified and brought under the law
