The ruling Awami
League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said that the government was
actively considering impose a weeklong total lockdown from April 14.
In a virtual
briefing from his residence, the AL leader said, ‘The rate of COVID-19
infections and deaths are increasing rapidly. Along with this, the negligence
and reluctance of people are also increasing.’
Obaidul, also
the road transport and bridges minister, said that the tougher restrictions
were being considered due to their negligence in maintaining the current
measures to reduce COVID-19 infections.
Earlier, the
government issued an 11-point instruction restricting public movements across
the country for a week, with effect from April 5, as part of its effort to curb
the surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths.
On Thursday, Bangladesh recorded the highest number of single day COVID-19 deaths, with 74 more people dying of the deadly disease.
