The chief adviser to the interim government is Professor Muhammad Yunus
Human Rights Watch (HRW), an international human rights organization based in New York, has sent a letter to the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Professor Muhammad Yunus.
HRW confirmed the letter in a statement on Monday (August 26). The letter, written on August 19, was published yesterday, August 26.
The letter to the Chief Adviser said that the interim government should seek an outline at the upcoming session of the UN Human Rights Council to establish an independent mechanism for investigation and accountability of recent incidents in Bangladesh. The 57th session of the Council will begin on September 9 this year.
Human Rights Watch said the interim government should work with UN experts to act independently and uphold international standards against disappearances, torture and extrajudicial killings during the 15-year administration of Bangladesh's former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Apart from this, the letter also calls for protection of Rohingya refugees seeking asylum in Bangladesh, increased representation of women in the interim government and disbandment of forces such as the Rapid Action Battalion or RAB.
