Deaths from Covid rise again


26 more die, 1,868 new cases reported

The covid-19 casualty rate is still rising steeply in the country, with newly reported 26 more deaths in the last 24 hours till 8 am Saturday. 

On Friday, Bangladesh reported 18 deaths from the virus, which was 16 a day ago. However, the overall death rate remained stable between 1.52 and 1.53 percent.

In the meantime, the country witnessed a slight drop in infection rate with 1,868 fresh cases in the past 24 hours, with an infection rate of 9.39 percent. 

The cases of infection were recorded at 1,899, with a rate of 10.04 on Friday, while the number of fresh cases was 2,128 on Thursday, with an infection rate of 10.45.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed the matter through a press release signed by Prof Dr. Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of DGHS, on Saturday afternoon.

The overall death toll now stands at 8,668 and the number of Covid-19 cases now stands at 564,939 in the country, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) today.

Among the latest day's victims, 19 were men and seven were women. All of them died in different hospitals across the country.

Sixteen of them hailed from Dhaka, four from Chattogram, and one each from Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal, Rangpur, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions.

Meanwhile, 19,900 samples were tested in 219 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 4,388,011 samples have been tested in the country so far.

Also, 1,577 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 5,20,718 with a 91.56pc recovery rate.

The neighboring country India reported 40,953 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours - the highest daily-rise since November 29. In addition to the rising infections, India reported 188 deaths linked to the virus taking the total number of fatalities to 1,59,558, reports NDTV.

The dreaded Covid-19 claimed the lives of 2,715,584 people globally and nearly 123,018,895 people were infected till date, reports Worldometer.
