Covid death toll approaches 9,000

Covid-19 daily death figure in the country saw 45 deaths in the second consecutive day while infection rate recorded 18.94pc on Tuesday. 

On Monday, Covid-19 infection rate was 18.38pc and 45 people died from the virus. The infection rate was below 5pc for about past two months. However, the daily infection rate started rising from second week of March.

With the latest day's 45 more deaths, country's death toll from Covid-19 now stands at 8,994, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The Covid-19 daily death rate has dropped to 1.48 percent. The death rate was constant at 1.49 percent for the past two days.

In the last 24 hours, 5,042 people tested positive for Covid-19 and the number of novel coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 605,937.

Among the latest day's victims, 28 were men and 17 were women.

37 of them hailed from Dhaka, three each from Chattogram, two each from Rajshahi, Khulna and one from Sylhet division. 

All victims died in different hospitals across the country.

Meanwhile, 26,620 samples were tested in 224 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 4,643,645 samples have been tested in the country so far.

Also, 2,162 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 540,180 with an 89.15pc recovery rate.

The gender breakdown of Covid-19 victims' shows that 6,774 of the total deceased were men and 2,220 were women.

The government on Monday imposed a set of new restrictions amid the rising cases of Coronavirus in the country. The restrictions will be effective for the next two weeks.

14 days institutional quarantine mandatory for all passengers coming to Bangladesh from European countries and the United Kingdom.

Elsewhere, India recorded 56,211 new cases in the last 24 hours according to its Union health ministry data. With this, the nationwide tally in India reached 12,095,855. The country also recorded 271 fresh fatalities linked to the infection in the said period, and the death toll now stands at 162,114.

The global death toll from the deadly virus reached to 2,806,154 as Covid continues to devastate countries across the world. The total global Covid caseload is 128,317,896 , according to US-based Johns Hopkins University.
