The nationwide death toll due to Covid-19 in Bangladesh has crossed the 20,000 mark, while the caseload has crossed 1.2 million as the country logs 237 new Covid-19 deaths and 16,230 new cases in the past 24 hours, between 8am Tuesday and 8am Wednesday, according to the daily Covid-19 bulletin released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Wednesday afternoon.
With the latest tally in, the Covid-19 death toll in Bangladesh now stands at 20,016, while the total number of cases stands at 1,210,982. During the same period, some 13,470 Covid-19 patients also recovered around the country. The total number of recovered patients now stands at 1,035,884.

Of the 237 deceased – 149 men and 88 women – one was between the age of 91 and 100 years, 15 were between the age of 81 and 90 years, 45 were from the age group of 71-80 years, 78 were from the 61-70 age group, 44 were from the 51-60 age group, 34 were from the 41-50 age group, 11 were from the 31-40 age group, and nine were from the 21-30 age group.
Dhaka logged 8,271 cases, the highest among the divisions followed by Chittagong with 3,303 cases, Rajshahi with 917and Khulna with 866.
Dhaka division reported 70 deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Chittagong with 62 deaths. Khulna division counted 34 deaths while Rajshahi 21, Sylhet 18, Rangpur 16, Barisal nine, and Mymensingh seven. The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.65pc.
Vaccination
Till now 4,298,086 people were administered the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine. Meanwhile, a little over 1.525 million people received the first dose of the vaccine and are awaiting the second dose.
Additionally, 181,486 people received the first dose of Sinopharm vaccine in the 24 hours till Wednesday morning, taking the total to 1,666,698, while 5,355 people received the second dose taking the total to 17,424.
Meanwhile, 50,235 people have been administered the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and 288 people have been administered the second dose. Also, 481,715 people received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine till now.
The health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2, on March 8 last year.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 4,196,739 lives across the world and infected more than 196,169,700 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 177,815,392 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 220 countries and territories across the planet.
