Covid case rate keeps rising

Bangladesh has been showing a rising trend in Covid cases as the infection rate of the diseases was recorded at 7.15 percent of the total tests as in the last 24 hours. 

The country has logged more than 557,000 coronavirus cases so far with fresh 1,159 positive cases in a single day till Sunday morning – taking the number of infections highest this year. On Saturday, 1,014 people were tested positive for the virus, which is 6.62 percent of total tests.

The last time, the daily Covid-19 cases crossed the 1100-mark on December 30, 2020, when the number of cases was 1,235.

Although the infection rate was below 5 percent for about two months, new patient detection and infection rates have been rising since last week.

Besides, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed 18 more deaths from the dreaded virus in the last 24 hours.

On January 10, the country last recorded a higher single-day caseload above the 1,000-mark (1,071 cases). Since then, the number remained below the 1,000 marks, until Wednesday when it shot to 1,018.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) press release, issued Saturday afternoon, the infection or test positivity rate from the last 24 hours was 7.15 percent and the overall rate to date stood at 13.07 percent.

The country’s death toll from the virus now stands at 8,545.

In the last 24 hours, 1,159 people tested positive for Covid-19 and the number of novel coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 557,395.

The latest day’s infection rate was 7.15 percent of the total tests, though the overall rate in the country to date was 13.07 percent. The death rate stands at 1.53 percent.

Among the latest day’s victims, 12 were men and six were women.

Moreover, ten of them hailed from Dhaka, five from Chattogram, two from Rajshahi, and one from the Barishal division.

Deaths by age group

All the deceased died in different hospitals across the country. Meanwhile, 16,206 samples were tested in 219 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 4,264,551 samples have been tested in the country so far.

Also, 1,385 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 511,695 with a 91.80 percent recovery rate.

The country’s maiden cases were reported on March 8 this year and the first death from the virus was reported on March 18.

Other details 

Of the deceased over the last 24 hours, 12 were men and six were women. Ten were from Dhaka Division, five from Chittagong, two from Rajshahi, and one from the Barisal divisions.

Of the total deceased since March 18 last year, 6,463 were men and 2,082 were women.

Meanwhile, 16,206 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in 219 labs across the country in the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, 1,385 patients recovered from Covid-19 at the same time, raising the total to 511,695 with a 91.80 percent recovery rate.

The director-general of DGHS on Sunday warned that dangers lie ahead of the country if people continue to ignore health guidelines.

Bangladesh is witnessing a sudden surge in coronavirus cases while experts said it could be the start of a second wave in the country.
