Leaders and activists of Islamist parties clashed with police in protest of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit. Clashes erupted in front of the Baitul Mukarram mosque after Friday (March 26th) Friday prayers.
Later in the evening, students of Kutubkhali Madrasa in Jatrabari blocked the road in Jatrabari area of the capital. As a result, traffic in the area around Jatrabari including Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet highways was stopped. In this situation, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed all over the country including the capital Dhaka.
On Friday (March 26) night, BGB Public Relations Officer BGB Spokesperson Director (Operations) Lt. Colonel Faizur Rahman confirmed the matter to Jago News.
He said VVIPs are now stationed in the country. Many Islamist parties have started anti-Modi movement today. The BGB has been deployed all over the country to keep the law and order situation in the country normal.
Asked how many platoons BGB have been deployed across the country, he said, "It is not possible to say for sure now how many platoons have been deployed." However, it has been deployed all over the country.
On the morning of the second day of the visit (March 26), Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay homage to Bangabandhu by visiting his tomb at Tungipara in Gopalganj. He also visited two temples in Satkhira and Gopalganj and expressed his interest in exchanging views with the local people.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Syed Nurul Islam said, "The protesters have used the mosque as a shield." The mosque is the holy place of Muslims. Police did not enter the mosque to protect its sanctity. If it weren't for the mosque, we could have brought them under the law. The amount of bricks that have been thrown at the police today will be a few trucks. It will be investigated how so many bricks came inside the mosque. '
He said, "It is an honor for us that the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has come to Bangladesh. They have clashed to destroy that dignity. I have doubts in my mind as to whether they really want the dignity of the state or not. They do not want the dignity of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is going to be established in a dignified state, they don't want that either. They want a Taliban-type state. "
Police officer Syed Nurul Islam said, "As you know, there are demonstrations in Baitul Mukarram almost every day." They do all kinds of sarcastic things. Shoes-sandals are shown from here, black flags, brooms are shown. As the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is the invited guest on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence. So we had a security cordon so that no embarrassing situation would arise today. '
He added, "Some Muslims started the procession while the other Muslims were praying inside. They were showing shoe-sandals. This was prevented by other devoted musluims. This led to clashes between the two groups. At one point, those who were wearing shoes and sandals took up positions inside the mosque and started throwing bricks from inside. Other worshipers were injured by brickbats. Many were injured and left. They even attacked the police. '
In response to a question on how the BCL and Juba League leaders and activists, along with the police, took to confront the protesters, the DC of Motijheel Zone said, "A group of worshipers were chanting slogans from inside the mosque, showing shoes and brooms against the Indian Prime Minister." Another group of worshipers was opposing their actions. Since then this conflict began. Those who showed their shoes took up positions inside the mosque. And those who opposed them were attacked by them and took up positions in different parts of the road. We told those of you who are inside the mosques to get out. Then many listened to us. And those who are over-enthusiastic are still there. '
Meanwhile, Narendra Modi arrived in Bangladesh on a two-day state visit on Friday morning. Police had earlier warned that any misconduct surrounding his visit would not be tolerated.
