Bangabandhu, Bangalees and Relevant Thoughts- originally written in Bengali by Professor Dr. Mijanur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor of Jagannath University (JnU) and translated by Khandoker Montasir Hassan, Director and Associate Professor of English, Institute of Modern Languages (IML) and Rabita Rahman, Lecturer of  Institute of Modern Languages (IML), JnU.

The book was launched on December 20, 2020 and published by Merit Fair Publication. The book is a compilation volume of 14 thought provoking and impeccable write ups by Professor Dr. Mijanur Rahman who is an academician to the core, a columnist, political analyst, and the Vice Chancellor of JnU, Bangladesh.

According to the translator of the book Khandoker Montasir Hassan, Director, Institute of Modern Languages (IML), JnU: “The book will introduce readers to the innovative and uncommon ideas of Professor Rahman that stretch beyond the traditional boundaries of thoughts, providing contexts to a wide variety of contemporary issues. The distinctive nature of the writer’s individualism and outlook towards anything and everything that matters is inescapably noteworthy for anyone who comes across his writings.  Not a single major incident of contemporary Bangladesh within the time frame of writing these articles remained untouched from author’s concern. Against every problem he has his own point of view, his own style of observation, and most of which are unique in nature. He has his own style of thinking by standing against the traditional misconceptions.”

Altogether, there are fourteen columns in the book. On the basis of theme, the columns can be classified into five broad categories (1) Bangabandhu, Bengalis and Bangladesh (2) International Politics (3) Philosophical: two columns. One is Today is not like yesterday and tomorrow will also be different from today. The second one is Palm-tree and Relevant Thoughts (4) Economic: two columns. Only Agriculture Can Save Bangladesh and Social Marketing in the management of unwholesome demands; and (5) Religious Education: Recognition of Qawmi Certificates {History and Politics}.

About the book Dr. Arun Kumar Goswami, Professor of Political Science writes: in the collected volume of Professor Mijan’s columns we witness the work of a multi-talented and erudite scholar of the country. He believes that the thought provoking columns are enormously helpful for understanding contemporary Bangladesh society and these are also inspirational for building a knowledge-based society.

Professor Dr. Siddhartha Shankar Joarder, Former Chairman of the Department of Philosophy  of the university writes, “Professor Mijanur Rahman sees everything from two different perspectives, one as an educationist and another from political standpoint. As a result, a nice synthesis has been interwoven in almost all essays written here. Lot of citations is addressed ranging from political personality to economist, philosopher to Business leader. For obvious reason, readers will find their immense interest relating those issues to present sociopolitical problem of Bangladesh.”
