Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said that the historic March 7 speech of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the real declaration of the country's independence.

The prime minister said this while addressing a programme marking the day, organised by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs in the afternoon.

In his March 7 speech, Bangabandhu gave all directions for making preparations for the Liberation War, Sheikh Hasina -- eldest daughter of the Father of the Nation – said, joining the programme from Gono Bhaban.

"…He (Bangabandhu) asked people to face the enemy with whatever they have. He also knew that the moment he made the declaration of independence, he might not survive," Hasina said.

The PM added, "Bangabandhu went on to say 'Ebarer sangram amader muktir sangram; ebarer sangram swadhinotar sangram'. In the speech, he said it (ebarer sangram) twice and the last time most emphatically."

"…So, in other words, March 7 speech is the real declaration of independence," she said.

On this day in 1971, Bangabandhu through his fiery and soulful address made a clarion call to the people to fight against the Pakistani rulers to achieve long-cherished independence.
