Among the Covid-19 deaths in Chattogram, 79.58% have occurred among people aged 50 or above.
In the district, so far 482 people have succumbed to the hitherto unprecedented pandemic that has turned the world upside down all of a sudden at the beginning of the 2020, affecting all the countries across the globe one by one within a time span of no more than three months.
Among the 482 Covid deaths in the last one year (till Friday) in the district, 78 passed away in the last 22 days, according to the Chattogram Health Department statistics.
The numbers of infections and deaths in the district have been increasing at an alarming rate since the beginning of the second wave of the pandemic in the country last month.
The first corona patient in the district was identified on 3 April last year, and six days later, on 9 April, the first Covid patient died in the port city. The corona death toll in Chattogram crossed the 400 mark on 6 April this year.
According to the district civil surgeon's office, the death toll from the coronavirus in Chattogram was 480 till Thursday. Of them, 352 were men and 126 women. Among the dead, 290 men and 82 women were over 50 years of age, which is 79.58% of the total deaths.
In addition, 61 people who were killed by the pandemic were aged between 41 and 50 years, which is 12.70% of the total deaths. Between 31 and 40 years of age, 23 people died of corona, which is 12.70% of the total deaths. Moreover, five people between the ages of 21 and 30; five between the ages of 11 and 20; and four between the ages of one and 10 have died of corona in Chattogram district.
Chattogram Divisional Health Director Dr Hasan Shahriar Kabir told the media, "People over the age of 50 are the most vulnerable against the deadly virus.
"In Chattogram also, like in other parts of the country, most of the victims of the pandemic come from that age group. The main reason is their various old age complications."
Sheikh Fazle Rabbi, civil surgeon of the district, said, "To reduce the number of deaths of people over 50 years of age, the elderly members of the family should be taken care of specially. They should always be given special attention."
Among the 482 victims of the Covid-19 pandemic in Chattogram district, 359 are dwellers of the port city while 123 died in different upazilas.
In the port city, the highest number of 32 people died at Halishahar thana; 23 at Panchlaish thana; 22 in Chandgaon thana; 17 in Chawkbazar thana; 16 in Khulshi thana; 12 in Dampara, Agrabad and Pahartali thanas; and 11 at Akbarshah thana. The death toll from the coronavirus did not exceed two in other police stations of the city.
Besides, outside the city, the highest death toll was 22 in Hathazari upazila while 15 died from the coronavirus in Sitakunda upazila; 14 in Patiya and Raozan upazilas and 10 in Rangunia upazila. In other upazilas of the district, the death toll did not exceed two.
Meanwhile, according to age-based statistics, the mostly infected persons are over 50 years of age with a 28.73% infection rate.
The infection rate among people of 31 to 40 years of age is 23.57%. The infection rate among people aged 21 to 30 years is 19.68%, while infection rate among people from 41-50 years age group is 18.52%.
