Four local journalists were injured in an attack allegedly carried out by ruling party men in Mandalpara village of Thakurgaon Sadar upazilaon Saturday afternoon.
The incident happened when the reporters attempted to take photos of the unruly supporters of Nobel Kumar Singh, a chairman candidate with boat symbol for February 7 Senua Union Parishad Election, while they were gearing up to attack supporters of an independent candidate, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent.
The AL men reportedly swooped on the reporters with sticks and beat them up, leaving four of them injured.
Tension prevailed in the area between supporters of AL-backed candidate Nobel Singh and independent aspirant Motiur Rahman (motorcycle symbol) after both groups separately called meetings at the same place in the village around 2:30pm on Saturday, MdTanvirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Thakurgaon Police Station, said citing locals.
Hearing the news, the journalists went to the spot and found that a group of unruly men were collecting branches from trees to prepare for a clash, the OC said.
As they began taking photographs, the men swooped on the reporters and beat them up with sticks leaving the four district correspondents of different print and news portals injured, the police official also said.
The injured are: TanvirHasanTanu of daily Ittefaq, MahiuddinTalukdarHimel of RisingBD.com, SohelRana of NewsBangla.com, and JahidHasanMilu of DoinikUsharBani.
Local people, especially women of the village, came forward to rescue them and later took them to ThakurgaonSadar Hospital.
Three of the injured were admitted to the hospital while Milu took primary treatment.
Tanu confirmed the incident alleging that activists of local Chhatra League and Jubo League units carried out the attack.
He also alleged that they made phone calls to local police repeatedly but the law enforcers did not extend support in time.
Refuting allegation, OC Tanvir said police went to the spot after being informed and rescued the journalists.
