After giving houses to homeless people across the country, this time the government has taken initiative to build one-story houses for 30,000 indigent freedom fighters.

This 635 sq ft ‘Bir Nibas’ with two beds, two toilets, dining and kitchen will be constructed in the vita of indigent freedom fighters and their families scattered across the country.

For this, a project titled 'Construction of Housing for Indigent Freedom Fighters' at a cost of about Tk 4,123 crore are being taken up. The project will be implemented by the DC office of 64 districts and the office of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer under the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.

The project will be presented at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday for final approval, said a member of the Physical Infrastructure Department of the Planning Commission. Mamun-al-Rashid said.

He said, "This project will be implemented as a replacement for the project titled 'Construction of multi-storied buildings for indigent freedom fighters in every district and upazila' withdrawn in 2019."

He said a project was approved by ECNEC on March 8, 2018, to construct multi-story buildings for freedom fighters in every district and Upazila. Under the project, a total of 6,000 flats were to be constructed in 532 buildings across the country at a cost of Tk 2,273 crore.

Later, the proposal was withdrawn on February 28, 2019, to do the work on the basis of reality as per the demands of the freedom fighters.

The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs spoke to many heroic freedom fighters at that time to understand the reality. They said they did not want to leave their Vita and family and move into those flats. That is why the project was withdrawn.

This time the project is being taken as an alternative to the new project, said Mamun-al-Rashid.

This member of the Planning Commission said that the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs saves the information of the indigent freedom fighters all over the country. It shows that the number of indigent freedom fighters is much higher. In the end, it was taken as 30 thousand.

After that, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs restructured the DPP and prepared a project proposal worth Tk 4,123 crore, which is targeted to be completed by 2023 in the draft.

Mamun-al-Rashid said, this time through the project, the freedom fighters have two bedrooms in their own vita. Two toilets, a kitchen, a drawing-room, a one-story building 'Bir Nibash' will be constructed. The cost of building each house has been estimated at 13 lakh 43 thousand 618 Taka.

If the project is approved, the work will start from June this year and the target is to hand over the keys to the freedom fighters by 2023, he said.

On the occasion of the golden jubilee of independence and the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, this project has been taken as a step and gift of the Prime Minister, he said.
