The National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 has recommended enforcing a minimum of 14-day complete countrywide shutdown to stem the tide of infection.
At a meeting of NTAC on June 23, chaired by committee Chief Prof Dr Mohammad Shahidullah, the committee suggested allowing only the emergency services to operate during this period.
If we fail to properly enforce this (shutdown), the health system will falter no matter how well prepared we are, the committee said in a press release on Thursday.
Bangladesh on Thursday recorded 6,058 coronavirus cases, the highest in nearly two and a half months. The health authorities also registered 81 deaths, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.
The local death tally now stands at 13,868 as the number of confirmed cases soar to 8,72,935. The mortality rate remains at 1.59 per cent.
In the press release, the NTAC said the only a complete shutdown can prevent the spread of the delta variant.
The government had earlier announced a nine-day lockdown in seven districts since June 22 to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Restrictions in Narayanganj, Gazipur, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Rajbari, Madaripur, and Gopalganj will end on June 30.
