In a statement issued on March 20, 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said that the people of Bengal were ready to accept any sacrifice to survive as free citizens of an independent country. On this day, Bangabandhu had a two-and-a-half hour meeting with Yahya Khan at the President’s House in Dhaka.
The fourth meeting was held between Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and President Yahya Khan. After the discussion, Bangabandhu said, there will be another meeting tomorrow. On the same day, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman said in a statement that the people are ready to accept any sacrifice to survive as free citizens of an independent country. He called upon all to continue the peaceful movement.
Artists took to the streets in the non-cooperation movement with freedom posters on their chests. Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani called for the observance of March 23 as Independent East Bengal Day.
