Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 from its Rangpur headquarters arrested an active member of the banned militant outfit ‘Ansar al-Islam’ from Babubazar Mitford area in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon.

“Acting on a tip-off, a special operational team of RAB-13 conducted a raid in the area around 1:30 pm and arrested the militant,” said a press release issued here Monday by Media Officer of RAB-13 and ASP Samuel Sangma.

The arrestee has been identified as Abu Bakkar Sakib, 19, of Chandpur district. A mobile phone, a SIM card used for publicity of militancy, soft copies of his posted extremism books in different social media, manual for armed training and screenshots of his communication with other militants and other goods were seized from his possession.

During the primary interrogation, the arrested confessed that he had been secretly conducting publicity on militancy, extremism and subversive militant activities using online internet-based Facebook, telegram and other means for a long time.

He is an active member of ‘Ansar al-Islam’ and had been targeting innocent youths and youngsters to inspire them in militancy and extremism using the social media.

He also admitted that the militant organisation had a plan to conduct subversive activities during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festivity to defame the country and its government, the release added.

The elite force has taken legal action against the arrested extremist and continues investigation to nab the other cohorts of the arrested militant.
