The recent major plane crash in China has increasingly stoked fears among the future air passengers about the safety of air transportation across the world. Plane crashes mostly take place due to technical faults or sometimes human errors. Let us roll back the years and know about the major crashes. Here is a chronology of major air disasters since 2010.
Chinese Boeing jet crashes in mountains with 132 on board (2022)
This is the most recent crash that happened on March 21, 2022.A China Eastern Airlines (600115.SS) Boeing 737-800 with 132 people on board crashed in mountains in southern China on Monday after a sudden plunge from cruising altitude at about the time when it would normally start to descend ahead of its landing. Later it was confirmed that all the people on board died.
Indonesian Boeing 737 Sriwijaya Air crash in Java Sea (2021)
On 9 January, 2021,A Boeing 737, operated by Sriwijaya Air, crashes into the Java Sea minutes after taking off from Jakarta. All 62 people on board are killed, including seven children and three babies. Officials say a problem with the aircraft's autothrottle had been reported a few days before the crash.
Airbus A320 crashes in a residential area of Southern Pakistan (2020)
Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303 was a scheduled domestic flight from Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore to Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan. On 22 May 2020, the Airbus A320 flown crashed in Model Colony, a densely populated residential area of Karachi only a few kilometres from the runway, while on a second approach after a failed landing. Of the 91 passengers and 8 crew on board the aircraft, 97 were killed, and two passengers survived with injuries. Eight people on the ground were also injured in the accident, one of whom later succumbed to her injuries.
Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 shot down by Iran (2020)
Ukraine International Airlines flight PS752 crashes shortly after taking off from the Iranian capital Tehran, killing all 176 passengers and crew members on board on 8 January, 2020. The incident took place amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran, and the Iranian government eventually admitted it had downed the plane "unintentionally".
Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max crashes six minutes after take-off (2019)
Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in Ethiopia to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya. On 10 March 2019, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft which operated the flight crashed near the town of Bishoftu six minutes after takeoff, killing all 157 people aboard. Flight 302 is Ethiopian Airlines's deadliest accident to date.
Lion Air Flight 610 Boeing 737 Max crashes into Java Sea (2018)
Lion Air Flight 610 was a scheduled domestic flight from Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, Jakarta to Depati Amir Airport, Pangkal Pinang in Indonesia. On 29 October 2018, the Boeing 737 MAX operating the route crashed into the Java Sea 13 minutes after takeoff, killing all 189 passengers and crew. It was the first major accident involving the new Boeing 737 MAX series of aircraft, introduced in 2017.
Algeria military plane crash, 257 dead near Algiers (2018)
On 11 April 2018, an Ilyushin Il-76 military transport aircraft of the Algerian Air Force crashed shortly after take-off from Boufarik Airport, Boufarik, Algeria, which is near Blida and south-west of the capital, Algiers. All 257 people on board were killed, making the accident the deadliest air crash on Algerian soil. Passengers from Western Sahara, a disputed territory annexed by Morocco after Spain withdrew in 1975, were among the fatalities.
Turkish Airlines Flight 6491 Boeing 747-400F crashes into a residential area (2017)
Turkish Airlines Flight 6491 was a scheduled international cargo flight operated by ACT Airlines on behalf of Turkish Cargo, from Hong Kong to Istanbul via Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. On 16 January 2017, the Boeing 747-400F flying the route crashed in a residential area while attempting to land in thick fog at Manas International Airport, Bishkek. A total of 39 people including all four crew members on board and 35 residents on the ground were killed.
Russian military Tu-154 jet airliner crashes in the Black Sea (2016)
On 25 December 2016, a Tupolev Tu-154 jetliner of the Russian Defence Ministry crashed into the Black Sea shortly after taking off from Sochi International Airport, Russia, while on route to Khmeimim Air Base, Syria. All 92 passengers and crew on board, including 64 members of the Alexandrov Ensemble choir of the Russian Armed Forces, were killed. The aircraft had flown from Chkalovsky Airport and had landed at Sochi to refuel.
Plane carrying Brazilian football club Chapecoense runs out of fuel, crashes near Medellin (2016)
LaMia Flight 2933 was a charter flight of an Avro RJ85, operated by LaMia that on 28 November 2016 crashed near Medellín, Colombia, killing 71 of the 77 people on board. The aircraft was transporting the Brazilian Chapecoense football squad and their entourage from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, to Medellín, where the team was scheduled to play at the 2016 Copa Sudamericana Finals. One of the four crew members, three of the players, and two other passengers survived with injuries.The official report from Colombia's civil aviation agency, Aerocivil, found the causes of the crash to be fuel exhaustion due to an inappropriate flight plan by the airline, and pilot error regarding poor decision making as the situation worsened, including a failure to declare an emergency after fuel levels became critically low, thus failing to inform air traffic control at Medellin that a priority landing was required.
Airbus A321 crashes over central Sinai (2015)
An Airbus A321,Metrojet Flight 9268 operated by Russian airline Kogalymavia, crashes over central Sinai some 22 minutes after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh, killing all 224 people on board on 31 October 2015. The Islamic State group's local affiliate later says it brought down the plane in response to Russian intervention in Syria.
Air Algerie AH5017 Flight 5017 disappears over Mali (2014)
Air Algérie Flight 5017 was a scheduled international passenger flight from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to Algiers, Algeria, which crashed near Gossi, Mali, on 24 July 2014. The McDonnell Douglas MD-83 twinjet with 110 passengers and 6 crew on board, operated by Swiftair for Air Algérie, and disappeared from radar about fifty minutes after take-off. There were no survivors.
Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashes near eastern Ukraine (2014)
Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was a scheduled passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that was shot down on 17 July 2014 while flying over eastern Ukraine. All 283 passengers and 15 crew were killed. Contact with the aircraft, a Boeing 777-200ER, was lost when it was about 50 km from the Ukraine–Russia border, and wreckage from the aircraft fell near Hrabove in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, 40 km from the border. Pro-Russian rebels are widely accused of shooting the plane down using a surface-to-air missile - they deny responsibility.
Tatarstan Airlines Flight 363 crashes at Kazan International Airport (2013)
Tatarstan Airlines Flight 363 Boeing 737 crashes on landing in Kazan International Airport of Russia, killing all 50 people on board. On 17 November 2013, the Boeing 737-500 crashed during an aborted landing. According to the official investigation report by the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC), the crash was a result of pilot error, arising from a lack of skill to recover from an excessive nose-up attitude during a go-around procedure. The pilots' deficiencies were caused by a problem with the airline's safety management and a lack of regulatory oversight.
Dana Air crashes in a densely populated area of Nigeria (2012)
Dana Air Flight 0992 was a scheduled Nigerian domestic passenger flight from Abuja to Lagos, Nigeria. On 3 June 2012, the McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft serving the route suffered a dual-engine failure during its approach to Lagos. It failed to reach its intended destination and crashed onto buildings, killing all 153 people on board and six on the ground. With 159 deaths, it remains as the deadliest commercial airliner crash in Nigerian history since Kano air disaster in 1973.
IranAir Flight 277 breaks into pieces near the city of Orumiyeh (2011)
On January 9, 2011, Iran Air Flight 277, a Boeing 727 on a scheduled domestic service from Tehran to Urmia, Iran, crashed after aborting its approach into Urmia Airport in poor weather. Seventy-eight of the 105 people on board were killed. The official investigation concluded that icing conditions and incorrect engine management by the crew led to a double engine flame-out, loss of altitude and impact with the ground. The pilots had reported a technical failure before trying to land.
Air India Express Flight 912 overshot a hilltop airport in southern India (2010)
Air India Express Flight 812, a Boeing 737–800 (registered VT-AXV) flying on the Dubai–Mangalore route, overshot runway 24 on landing at Mangalore Airport on 22 May 2010, killing 152 passengers and six crew members of the 166 people on board. The aircraft crashed into a wooded valley at the end of the runway and burst into flames. There were only eight survivors.
