Eminent musician and Souls drummer Subrata Barua Ronny has passed away at the age of 66.
He breathed his last while receiving treatment at Delta Medical College Hospital in Dhaka at 5:15am on Wednesday, his son Sunandan Barua confirmed the news to the media.
Ronny was suffering from lung cancer for over a year.
His mortal remains will be first taken to Shilpakala Academy and then to Charukola of Chittagong University, and Art College for people to pay their last respect.
He will be taken to the Buddhist Temple in DC Hill area of Chittagong for his final rites.
Subrata Barua Ronny, a towering figure of both the music and Buddhist communities, was born on March 31, 1955 in Chittagong.
He is left behind by his wife, a son, and a daughter, a host of friends, relatives, and well-wishers to mourn his death.
In 1973, Sazedul Alam, Ronny, and Momtazul Haque Lulu, founded Sharabela band. A year later, the trio along with Newaz Ahmed and Tapan Chowdhury formed Souls band. They are known as the pioneers of rock music in Bangladesh.
