Myanmar's military junta tried to get their hands on 1 billion from the Federal Reserve in New York shortly after the coup took power on February 1, but was blocked by US authorities, Reuters reported. According to a Reuters report based on statements made by three people, including a US government official who knows about the incident, the New York Fed has now blocked Myanmar's funds.

The request to transfer the funds, which was sent to Myanmar's central bank on February 4, was initially blocked by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. U.S. officials later withheld the transfer of funds. President Joe Biden later issued an executive order authorizing officials to suspend the transfer of funds.

Neither the New York Fed nor the US Treasury Department agreed to comment on the Myanmar account, Reuters reported. The New York Fed's recent crackdown on pro-democracy officials has prompted the country's military to appoint a new governor to the central bank and detain pro-democracy officials.

Myanmar's military rulers have sought to remove money from the New York Fed in a bid to reduce the risk of international sanctions after the military took control of the country by arresting representatives of elected governments, including Aung San Suu Kyi, Reuters reported. However, Reuters could not be reached for comment by Myanmar's military authorities or the central bank.

The United States, Canada, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand have imposed new sanctions on the Southeast Asian nation after Myanmar's military seized power on the first day of February, accusing it of rigging last November's election.

Since the coup the police and security forces stop protests until Thursday at least 54 people were killed in a terrible position information to the United Nations. More than 1,700 people have been arrested, including at least 29 journalists.
