Aircraft Carrying 80 Goes Down in Potomac River Near Washington

Emergency crews responded Wednesday to a suspected plane crash in the Potomac River near Washington, prompting Reagan National Airport to close runways amid the ongoing situation.

 
Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the incident on X, stating, “MPD is responding to an apparent air crash in the Potomac River. Multiple agencies are responding.” Meanwhile, DC Fire and Emergency Services reported that fireboats were dispatched after a “small aircraft” went down near the airport.


Initial reports indicate that the aircraft involved was an American Airlines flight, AA5342, operated by PSA Airlines, using a CRJ700 jet capable of carrying up to 80 passengers.

 

In a statement, American Airlines acknowledged the incident, saying, “We’re aware of reports that American Eagle flight 5342, operating from Wichita, Kansas (ICT) to Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA), has been involved in an incident. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
