Malawi's Vice President Saulos Chilima was killed in a plane crash. 9 other people in the plane also lost their lives.
The country's government confirmed the matter in a statement on Tuesday (June 11), Times Now reported. Earlier it was reported that the plane carrying Chilima had gone missing.
A senior military official said they believe the plane crashed in the Chikangawa forest. But it has not been found yet. However, it was later reported by the President's Office that it had crashed and all the passengers were killed.
Malawi Defense Force Commander Paul Valentino Phiri said on Tuesday (June 11) that rescue operations were being hampered by thick jungle and foggy weather.
The British media BBC reported that the Malawi Defense Force aircraft 'went off the radar' after leaving the capital Lilongwe on Monday morning (June 10). The plane was scheduled to land at Mojuju International Airport in the north of the country shortly after 10am local time.
In a speech late on Monday night, President Lazarus Chakwera said search and rescue operations were continuing after the plane carrying the vice president went missing.
Earlier, President Chakwera canceled his flight to the Bahamas. He was scheduled to leave for the trip on Monday evening.
The plane was reported missing on Monday but was reported to have crashed on Tuesday. He was on the plane on Monday to attend the funeral of late cabinet minister Ralph Kasambara. But on the way he met with an accident and was himself killed.
