Year’s highest rainfalls mount sufferings

Dhaka city and most of the country on Saturday woke up with rain-soaked, causing unbearable woes for regular commuters and office-goers as intermittent monsoon rains continued across the country.

Meteorologist Md. Abul Kalam Mallik of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Saturday said that the highest rainfall of the year in the last 24 hours was recorded 166 millimeters in Ishwardi. Apart from this, above 100 mm rainfall has also been recorded in different parts of the country.

“If it rains more than 89mm, we call it as heavy rain,” he said. “Sitakunda received 125 mm of rain and Sandeep received 106 mm of rain in 24 hours till Friday evening. Besides, 129 mm rainfall was recorded in Sandeep in 24 hours on the 7 June. Even today (Saturday), intermittent rains are likely to continue across the country, including the capital,” he added.

The monsoon trough is active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay, according to a Bangladesh Met Department weather forecast.

Meanwhile from 6 am to 3 pm, 28 mm of rain was recorded in Dhaka city.

“The axis of monsoon trough runs through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal to Assam across the central part of Bangladesh. One of its associated troughs extends up to North Bay,” said the BMD’s weather forecast.

However, maritime ports were advised to lower the local cautionary signal number three for now.

According to the forecast, light to moderate rain/thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.

Many places over Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions are likely to see moderately heavy to very heavy rainfalls including other places over the country.

An outlook for the next 72 hours forecasted by BMD, however, showed a possible decrease in rain/thundershowers.

The country’s maximum temperature on Friday was recorded 33.5 degrees Celsius at Srimangal in Sylhet and the lowest one on Saturday was 23.5 degrees Celsius at Rajshahi.
