World Bank signed with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib industrial project
The World Bank is providing US ৫ 500 million through the Private Investment and Digital Entrepreneurship Project (PRIDE) project, the lion's share (US (48.50 million, 93.40%) of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City Development Project under the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority. Through Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City will be spent to build a modern city. On this occasion, the project agreement was signed between the World Bank and Beja on 13 April 2021. It was signed on behalf of IDA by World Bank Country Director, Mercy Tembon and on behalf of Beja by Executive Chairman Mr. Pawan Chowdhury. The total cost of the project has been estimated at Tk 4,347 crore. The World Bank loan for the project is Tk 3,096.48 crore. Government funding for the project is Tk 369.64 crore.
Objectives and targets of the project:
Encouraging private investment and job creation in the economic zones under 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City' and establishing sustainability and environmental tolerance in the mainstream of development of economic zones across the country.
Purpose:
(A) To create conducive environment for private investment by developing various infrastructures in Zone-2A and Zone-2B of ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City’ and other surrounding zones;
(B) To demonstrate the benefits of sustainability and the use of environmental tolerance policies by establishing Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City as an environmentally friendly green economic zone; And
(C) To create new employment opportunities by attracting investment in the economic zones under 'Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City'.
The following activities will be undertaken to achieve the above specific objectives :
Under this project zone-2A and zone-2B economic zone inland roads and connecting roads together for a total of 30 km. Includes road construction. 31 km for storm water drainage. Drainage network has been proposed. About 990 acres of land development has been proposed to make the land suitable for industrial development.
one Investors Club and one OSS Center will be set up for domestic and foreign investors. Gas pipeline, 40 km long water pipeline for water supply and sanitary pipeline for waste disposal, increase in capacity of Ichakhali canal flowing through economic zone, about 40 km for protection of industrial city. Length boundary wall installation work has been included in the project.
47 MLD for industrial waste treatment. In addition to setting up a capable Central Effluent Treatment Plant and Solid Waste Management Plant for solid waste treatment, plans have also been included to set up a Biogas plant, waste sorting and material recovery facility.
Under this project, Rooftop and floating solar will be established for the use of renewable energy in industrial mills.
Moreover, 30 MLD to meet the demand for water in industrial plants. Under this project a capacity of desalination plant will be set up and 12.14 km long steam network will be set up to meet the demand of steam.
Establishment of Environmental Lab & Monitoring System for Environmental and Other Parameter Standard Examination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Industrial City has been included in the project. Other infrastructures include Child Care & Emergency Health Care Center, Establishment of Emergency Response Center, Beauty and Greening of Sheikh Hasina Lake and Mosque.
