ULAB GED Organised: Conservation Learning through the Buriganga–Turag Confluence – A Field Learning Programme to Save Rivers

A field practicum and sharing event was conducted on 18 July 2026 under the initiative of Department of General Education (GED), ULAB through ‘Conservation Learning through the Buriganga–Turag Confluence’ – to Save Rivers with jointly organized with Riverine People. A total of 105 students inclining 4 faculties from East West University and 40 students from the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) joined in program. Accompanied by faculty members from both universities, the participants visited the confluence ofBuriganga and Turag rivers as part of their academic field exercise.Mr. Sheikh Rokon, Secretary General of Riverine People, delivered a briefing on the historical significance of Buriganga and Turag rivers on spots. He discussed major challenges facing these rivers, including encroachment and pollution, and highlighted the initiatives undertaken by the government and civil society organizations. He also emphasized the crucial role of students and younger generation in protecting and restoring country's rivers.

Following the field visit, a sharing session was held in the ULAB Cafeteria. Professor Dr. ShahnajHusne Jahan, Head of GED, ULAB welcomed the participants and expressed her appreciation for organizing the field practicum on such a timely and thought-provoking issue. She emphasized the importance of enthusiastically engaging students in protecting the country's rivers. Dr. MumitaTanjeela, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, East West University, expressed her appreciation for this collaborative initiative and encouraged students to play a meaningful role in conserving these invaluable natural resources. Student representative from ULAB presented the major activities of the GED, with a particular focus on environmental protection and sustainable development initiatives. Mr. F. M. Anwar Hossain, President of Riverine People, shared an overview of the organization's ongoing activities and their research on Buriganga Riverincluding outlined its future plans, highlighting opportunities for collaboration with academic institutions and other stakeholders. A presentation on ULAB’s engagement on environment and sustainability including river conservation given by Srabonti Zaman, a student of ULAB.

Among others, the sharing session was attended by Dr. Rasel Hussain, Assistant Professor; Mr. Helal Uddin, Senior Lecturer; and Ms. Ruma Parvin, Senior Lecturer, and 2 students representativesof East West University. Mr. Rajat Kanti Roy, Trustee and Director (Riverine Archive), Riverine People, was also present at the event.

The program was facilitated by Dr. Ahmed AbidurRazzaque Khan, Assistant Professor, Department of General Education (GED), University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). Dr. Mohammed Mamun Or Rashid assisted in coordinating the field visit and managing the event.
