Traffic advisory: Heavy congestion expected in Dhaka this week, warns DMP

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a traffic advisory for Dhaka residents in the upcoming week, as multiple religious events and board examinations have coincided at the same time.

There will be three days of HSC exams, the return Ratha Yatra for followers of the Hindu religion, and the Tazia procession for Muslims observing Ashura this week.

S M Mehedi Hasan, Joint Commissioner (South) of the DMP Traffic Department, said this during a press conference on traffic management held at the DMP Media Center on Saturday.

He said that the entire week is expected to be congested. The traffic department is working to alleviate the traffic congestion and minimize public inconvenience.

He said, "The return Ratha Yatra will take place on Monday, when followers of the Sanatan religion will be out on the streets, increasing traffic throughout the city. Ashura will be observed on Wednesday, with the Tazia procession occurring on that day.

“Besides, the quota reform movement is also ongoing. Considering all these challenges, deputy commissioners of each division are working to reduce public inconvenience through effective traffic management," he added.

In response to a question about whether the quota reform movement at crucial locations like Shahbagh is causing public inconvenience and if the police contribute to this by not enforcing the law, he said: "In such undesirable situations, traffic division members coordinate within the eight divisions.

“Team DMP works jointly with the crime division. We always strive to minimize public inconvenience as much as possible," he added.
