Teacher dies after student hits him with cricket stump


A teacher, who was injured on Saturday after a student hit him with a cricket stump, died while undergoing treatment at Savar Enam Medical College and Hospital early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Utpal Kumar Sarkar (35), son of late Ajit Sarkar of Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj. The accused student has been absconding since the incident.

Confirming the incident, Yusuf Ali, in-charge of Enam Medical College and Hospital, said Utpal died while undergoing treatment around 5:15am Monday.

Utpal Sarkar was a lecturer in the political science department and chairman of the disciplinary committee at the Haji Yunus Ali School and College in Chitrasail area of Ashulia for almost 10 years. The accused is a class 10 student of the same school.


The school's principal, Saiful Hasan, said, "Every year, we host tournaments for girls' cricket and boys' football. It was planned again this time. On Saturday, a girls' cricket match was happening. Everyone was watching the game."

"Around 2pm, a student suddenly struck Utpal with a stump while he was standing on one side of the field, he said.

"Utpal was later rescued and admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar," he added.


The deceased's brother, Aseem Kumar Sarkar, said, "The student hit my brother as disciplinary action was taken against him for eve teasing. I plead for the Prime Minister and the education minister to intervene for a fair justice."

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Ashulia Police Station, Emdadul Haque, said, "Deceased's brother filed a case. The student and some unidentified others have been made accused. We are trying to arrest the accused."
