Talks of democracy don’t suit BNP: Hanif

Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif Tuesday said talks of democracy don’t suit BNP as the party attempted to kill opposition leader when they were in power.

He was talking to journalists after a meeting with presidents and general secretaries of AL’s Kushtia municipal ward units.

Hanif said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia had hatched conspiracy to assassinate the then Opposition Leader Sheikh Hasina by misusing state machinery when BNP was in power.

“Therefore, talks of democracy don’t suit those who wanted to prolong their staying in power by assassinating opposition leader through grenade attacks,” he said.

He said around 26,000 leaders and workers of AL were killed during the BNP’s regime from 2001 to 2006.

Now making comments on democracy by BNP is nothing but a farcical matter, he mentioned.

Hanif said Begum Zia was sentenced to 17 years of imprisonment on two corruption charges in 2018.

But due to generosity of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the convicted BNP chief is now staying in her residence, he said.

The government approved the proposal of suspending Khaleda Zia's prison sentences in two graft cases in several phases on humanitarian ground.

Kushtia district AL Joint General Secretary Sheikh Hasan Mehedi and Information and Research Secretary Rashedul Islam Biplab, were present, among others.
