Rohingyas will be resettled in US
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that the Rohingyas who fled the persecution of Myanmar and took refuge in Bangladesh and are in different parts of the region will be resettled in the United States.
He said this in a statement on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of Myanmar’s genocide against the Rohingyas.
This information was informed in a press release sent by the US State Department.
Antony Blinken said the United States has continued its support to the Rohingyas since 2017. In the current situation in Myanmar, the Rohingyas will not be able to return to their homeland “safely”. The United States alone has provided $1.7 billion in humanitarian aid to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and elsewhere in the region, including Myanmar, who have fled violence in Rakhine.
He added that the United States has expressed solidarity with the governments of other countries in the region, including Bangladesh, which sheltered the Rohingyas.
In the statement, the US Secretary of State also said, “As part of the broader international emergency humanitarian response, we are working to increase the resettlement of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and elsewhere in the region in significant numbers so that they can rebuild their lives in the United States.”
Noted that Rohingyas started coming to Bangladesh in groups on August 25, 2017, in the face of massive repression by the Myanmar military. Bangladesh provides humanitarian shelter to the Rohingyas who fled the country’s Rakhine State due to brutal torture. At that time, 7.5 lakh Rohingyas were given shelter. However, more than 350,000 Rohingyas were given shelter earlier. Currently, there are more than 11 lakh Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar. About 30,000 Rohingyas have been shifted to Bhasan Char.
This number of Rohingya refugees has become a burden for Bangladesh. Despite repeated calls to the Myanmar government and the international community to return the Rohingyas to their country, repatriation has not been possible until now without assurances.
