Road accidents claim 13 lives in two days
At least 13 people have been killed and nine others injured in separate road accidents across the country that occurred between Thursday and Friday. In Brahmanbaria, three people were killed and two others injured while a three-wheeler collided head with a truck in Sarailupazila of Brahmanbaria early on Friday morning.
The deceased were identified as Jahangir Mia, 35, Mahfuz Mia, 32, and Amzad, 30, all brick kiln workers and the residents of Shahbajpur village. The accident occurred around 6:00am on the highway near the Boishamura area when four brick kiln workers were on their way to their plant in the auto, said MdShahjalalaAlam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbajpur bus stand highway police station.
The impact of the collision between the auto and the truck coming from the opposite direction was such that three of the passengers died on the spot, the OC said. A probe has been ordered into the accident, he added.
In Chandpur, a bike ride to a local market in Chandpur turned tragic for three friends on Thursday noon as their bike crashed into a tree, killing one on the spot and injuring two others.
The accident occurred near the Badarpur area on the Hajiganj-Kachua-Gouripur road of Hajiganjupazila. The deceased was identified as Osman Gani, son of Tajul Islam of Mulpara village in Faridganjupazila. Arif Hossain,17, and Rony,17, his friends from Mokimabad village -- are being treated at a hospital. “The three friends were going to Hajiganj Bazar on the bike when the one riding it lost control of the two-wheeler and rammed a roadside tree, leaving all of them severely injuries,” said Harun Ur Rashid, OC of Hajiganj police station.
Locals rescued the three and took them to Upazila Health Complex, where Gani was declared dead on arrival. “The two injured have been shifted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital,” said DrShoeb Ahmed Chishti, chief medical officer of Upazila Health Complex.
In Natore, two people, including a 10-year-old child, were killed in two separate road accidents in Gurudaspurupazila of Natore district on Thursday. Quoting locals, OC of Gurudaspur police station, Abdul Motin said that 10-year-old Sabbir was hit by a motorcycle near the Nayapara area of the upazila and died on the spot. The OC added that the motorcyclist managed to flee the scene after the incident.
In another incident, Sanowarul Islam, 23, was run over by a speeding bus in Nayabazar area of the upazila. In Dinajpur, an eight-year-old girl returning home after attending Victory Day celebrations in her school died after being hit by a tractor in Dinajpur Thursday.
The accident occurred around 11:30am in the busy Ghughuratoli area of the district’s Chirirbandarupazila. The deceased was identified as Sumaiya, daughter of Monjer Ali of Fakirpara village in the upazila. She was a Class III student of Daffodil School. Eye-witnesses said that Sumaiya was hit by the tractor while she was crossing a road in the area. She died on the spot in the impact.
OC of the Chirirbandar police station, SubrataKusar said they have seized the tractor-trolley. In Faridpur, a grandmother and her granddaughter were killed in a head-on collision between a pick-up and an easy bike at Nagarkanda area of the district on Thursday.
Five more passengers were injured in the incident. Locals and fire service personnel rescued the injured and admitted them to FaridpurBangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital. The deceased were identified as NabirunNesa, 56, of Kumarpatti village in Saltharupazila and MoinaAkter, 17, daughter of Rafiq Sheikh. Sub-Inspector (SI), Shah Alam of Bhanga highway police station, said the bodies had been handed over to us by Nagarkanda Fire Service. “The legal issue is under process in this case.”
In Mymensingh, another couple on a motorcycle have died after being hit by a sand truck in Trishal on Thursday. The deceased were identified as EmdadulHaque, 35, of Daulatpurupazila of Kushtia, and his wife NargisAkter. Trishal police station OC (Investigation) Abu Bakar Siddique said as Nargis died on the spot, locals took the injured Emdadul to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in critical condition. “He was later pronounced dead at noon while undergoing treatment.” After receiving the information, he further said the police went to the spot and recovered Nargis’s body and motorcycle and brought it to the police station. Emdadul’s body was transferred to the hospital morgue for an autopsy. In Khulna, a young man named Al Amin was killed in a road accident in front of Nurnagar Passport Office on Thursday. He was injured on Wednesday night but was admitted to Gazi Medical College Hospital. He died while undergoing treatment. Sonadanga police station SI Al Amin said an inquest report was prepared, and the body was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for autopsy. “After the autopsy in the afternoon, it was handed over to his cousin.”
