Remains of 1971 genocide victims recovered from Muslimbazar buried

The remains of victims of 1971 genocide carried out by Pakistan occupation army, recovered from Muslimbazar mass killing site, were buried today with full state honor at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard.

The burial took place under the initiative of Bangladesh Army with the presence of Chief of Army Staff General S M Shafiuddin Ahmed, an ISPR release said.  The Pakistan occupation army carried out genocides in numerous mass killing sites, including at Muslimbazar, across Bangladesh in 1971.

The horrific crimes that took place in 1971 in Muslimbazar came in light on July 27, 1999, while digging a ditch during the renovation of Noori Mosque at Mirpur-12. The construction workers accidentally discovered human remains including skulls and bones.

The remains were tested by the War Crimes Facts Finding Committee which cross-matched tissue samples with living relatives of the victims to ensure the fact that the remains were indeed of the victims' 1971 genocide.

Parts of the remains were given to the Liberation War Museum while some were sent to the Army Museum for preservation. The rest were buried today under the army's supervision.

Senior army officials and notable personalities were present during the burial, among others.
