Relaxing restrictions will worsen situation

If the country’s border districts show laxity in enforcing restrictions, the present Covid-19 situation could worsen, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) warned that on Wednesday.

“Infections have been increasing since 4 June. The positivity rate is more than 12pc. Relaxation of restrictions in any place will not bring good results for us,” said DGHS spokesperson Prof Nazrul Islam at the virtual bulletin.

He noted that the detection rate is more than 25pc in Joypurhat, more than 29pc in Chapainawabganj and over 23pc in Rajshahi district.

“Infections are on the rise in these areas…these places have become stable due to restrictions. If this can be continued, then we can get rid of the upward growth in cases,” he added.

Nazmul Islam said DGHS has been granted permission to use vaccines sourced from multiple countries and they are hopeful about resuming the first dosage campaign soon.

Additionally, those who are waiting on the second vaccine dose are expected to get the jabs immediately.

“Four hospitals in Dhaka will receive the 1,00,620 doses of Pfizer-Biontech vaccine. They are Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Kurmitola General Hospital, Sheikh Russell National Gastroliver Institute and Hospital and National Ophthalmology Institute,” the DGHS official said.
