Prices of chicken, eggs on rise

The prices of eggs and chicken have gone up a notch this week in the kitchen market. In addition, the prices of green chilli and onion have also gone up. Sugar, whose prices have been skyrocketing, continued to remain high since last week. 

After visiting several kitchen markets around the capital including Hatirpool Kacha Bazar, New Market Kacha Bazar, Lalbagh Kacha Bazar and Mohakhali Kacha Bazar it was perceived that sugar and oil are being sold more than the government’s fixed rate. Sugar is being sold at Tk84-86 per kg, depending on the brand.  Yasin Sarker, a grocer at Kawran Bazar said: “Sugar price increased last week. despite no shortage, although it’s not clear why the suppliers are increasing the prices” Onion is being sold Tk48-50 per kg, local garlic is being sold at Tk60 per kg and imported garlic at Tk90 per kg. Eggs per dozen are being sold at Tk115-120.  Chicken is being sold at Tk420 to 460 whereas broiler chicken is being sold at Tk140-160 per kg and Sonali Pakistani chicken at Tk280 to 300. Beef is being sold at Tk580- 600 per kg and mutton is being sold at Tk800-850 kg. There has been an increase in the price of green chilli which is now being sold at Tk110-115 per kg from last week’s Tk80-100. “The price of green chilli has been rising for the past several days. It is more than Tk100 per kg in the wholesale market and we are selling at Tk115-120,” said Aminul Islam, a vendor. Although bottled soybean oil per litre is being sold at Tk153, five-litre containers are being sold at Tk680-728 and loose soybean or palm oil is being sold at Tk145.

Another vendor Jewel Munshi said: “Companies are blaming the international market for the increase in edible oil price. We have nothing to do with it.” The prices of Fresh Soyabean five-litre is Tk728, Rupchanda five-litre is being sold at Tk760 and Teer five-litre at Tk708.” Meanwhile, most of the vegetables on the market are available at Tk60 to 65 per kg.  Ahead of winter, vendors hinted that prices may come down when new seasonal vegetables enter the market. Consumer Mohammad Atowarat Karwan Bazar said: “If any prices go up, it’s us, the general people who have to suffer. Monitoring can resolve this abnormal price hike.” According to vendors, the price of rice remained similar to last week.  Miniket rice is being sold at Tk60-62 per kg, nazirshail Tk60-63, atashbalam Tk50-54, paijam Tk50-55, gutiswarna Tk45-48 and chinigura is being sold at Tk90-95.” Meanwhile, potatoes are sold at Tk20-25 per kg, eggplant at Tk40-50, cucumber, snake gourd (chichinga), sponge gourd (dhundal) are being sold at Tk40 per kg with an increase of Tk5 compared to last week. Luffa (jhinga) and spiny gourd (kakrol) are being sold at Tk35-40 per kg. And bitter gourd (korola) is being sold at Tk40-48 per kg.
