Apart from clinching overall law and order in the country, including suppressing terrorism and militancy, the police have to perform various duties. The organization has to take steps to collect and prevent intelligence, prosecute, conduct investigations, assist in the judicial process, provide VIP security and protocol. The scope of works and responsibilities are increasing day by day for this organization. The police are introducing new units to clinch service for the citizens of the country.
The authority referred that in the past the police didn’t used to have much units other than the police headquarters, Special Branch (SB), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police, Sharda Police Academy, a few training centers, divisions, metropolitan, district and police station units. At present there are several units including RAB, PBI, Anti Terrorism Unit and Traffic Units are working altogether with the police. Multiple more units including medical, education unit, air wing are being added.
In total the police has 177 units. There are around two hundred thousand staffs working in the police in several units including Highways, Railways, Industrial, Naval, Tourist Police, Armed Police Battalion (APBN) and Special Police Battalion (SPBN). The modernization of the force is now at an enviable stage. In the current age of information technology, there are cyber sections in police units across the country to curb cyber crime. The government is thinking of setting up a separate cyber police station. An airport oriented separate police force has already been formed.
There is no alternative of training. For which everyone from police constables to senior officers have to take part in regular training. There are several training centers across the country. The police staffs are being trained from abroad as well. Upon invitation, police officers are visiting different countries including the European countries regularly to report our success rates for suppressing militancy.
The National Emergency Service called '999' has been launched to provide immediate services to the country people. By opening a Facebook page in every unit including the police headquarters, the police is ensuring fast service by receiving complaints from the common victims. Numerous victims are receiving the comprehensive services from these two units of police. To provide digitalized services the police has launched an app known as BD Police Helpline. There is additional separate commando unit of Swat police to take quick action to suppress the militants.
Bangladesh Police is the member of the international police organization Interpol. The unit operates for Interpol under the name National Central Bureau at the police headquarters. This branch is working regularly to identify and locate the most wanted delinquents who have fled to different countries. The police now have a state-of-the-art forensic department, money laundering, human trafficking, and call dialing records (CDR) section. The police have attained stunning success by revealing the mystery of many clueless and sensational incidents through DNA tests.
