Newly constructed bridge has collapsed in Sunamganj
The newly constructed bridge over Kondanala canal in Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj district has collapsed. Authorities said the bridge collapsed on Monday morning, when the girder was installed and the hydraulic jack broke down. Five girders of the bridge were broken due to the use of substandard materials. The construction work of the bridge has been going on for about 2 years. Every day 30-40 workers are working on the bridge.
According to the Roads and Highways Department, they have the started construction of three bridges on the Sunamganj-Jagannathpur road at a cost of Tk 53 crore in the 2019-20 financial years. The contractor AM Builders got the implementation work.
Authorities began work on the deck of the girder bridge, which was built elsewhere, on Monday morning, the RSA said. At that time, one of the four hydraulic jacks broke down and the bridge collapsed and fell to the ground.
Kazi Nazrul Islam, sub-divisional engineer of Sunamganj Roads and Highways Department, said the main structure of the bridge was not damaged as a result of the girder collapse. The contractor will remove the collapsed girders at his own expense and install new ones.
