Motorbike accidents left 1,758 dead in last 10 months


One thousand seven hundred and fifty-eight people died in 1,653 motorcycle accidents throughout the country between January and October.

Also, motorcycle accidents rose to 63.60 percent and deaths increased to 71.35 percent during the 10-month period, according to a report of Road Safety Foundation.

Of the deaths, 1,327 people (75.48 percent) were between 14-45 years old, the report said.

Among the total accidents, 349 incidents (21.11 percent) happened when the motorbikes collided head-on with other vehicles; 583 incidents (35.26 percent) happened when the bikers lost control of the two wheelers; 715 incidents (43.25 percent) happened when other vehicles hit the bikes; and six (0.36 percent) occurred due to other reasons.

After analysing the accidents, it was learnt that bikers were responsible for 672 (40.65 percent) incidents; bus drivers were responsible for 178 incidents (10.76 percent); truck drivers responsible for 443 incidents (26.79 percent); and drivers of covered vans, pick up vans, and tractors were responsible for 158 incidents (9.55 percent).
