More than two hundred houses destroyed in Cox's Bazar
The low-lying areas of Cox's Bazar district have been inundated due to the high rise in water level due to the full moon and cyclone Yas. Trees have been uprooted in the coastal areas and more than two hundred houses have been destroyed.
The tidal waters have inundated more than 50 villages in Kutubdia, Maheshkhali, Teknaf and St. Martin's Islands in the district. Embankments overflowed in at least three areas of Cox's Bazar city. Thousands of people have been flooded. The Cox's Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive road is also flooded.
In St. Martin, the only coral island in the country, vegetation is being uprooted by high tide. The jetty's platoon and roads were damaged. However, the local administration said that there are all kinds of preparations to protect the lives and property of the people. A landslide has occurred in the embankment block at Shahparir Island in Teknaf.
The chairman of St. Martin's Union Council said more than 50 homes had been damaged on the island in the meantime. He said St. Martin's had not seen so much water in the last three decades, adding that he feared St. Martin would sink anytime if a sustainable embankment was not built to protect the island.
Matarbari Union Chairman Master Mahmudullah said the tidal waters had destroyed several parts of the 4 km embankment in Matarbari Union. Water has entered the locality. Already 50 to 60 houses have collapsed. The plants have been uprooted. The local administration is providing food aid to the affected people. He fears that if the tide rises again at night and enters the locality, there will be huge damage.
Kaiser Sikder, a resident of Dwip Upazila Kutubdia and a local journalist, said more than 20 villages in Kutubdia's North Dhurung, Ali Akbardale and Kairbil Unions have been flooded due to abnormal tidal water. As a result, more than a hundred houses have been damaged. Thousands of people have been stranded.
Similarly, embankments in different areas including Dhalghata in Maheshkhali have collapsed and more than 50 houses have been submerged, said local journalist Rakiyat Ullah.
Teknaf Upazila Chhatra League general secretary Nurul Mustafa said some houses were damaged by tidal water and strong winds in Shahparirdwip. The embankment has been damaged. St. Martin's condition is dire. The giant sea is continuing the violence. The jetty pontoon is breaking down.
Cox's Bazar Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Mohammad Amin Al Parvez said the evacuation of people at risk along the coast of Cox's Bazar had started two days ago. Shelters and volunteers were kept ready. We have all kinds of preparations to protect human life and property.
