Man gets life term over attempted murder of Prof Zafar Iqbal
A court here Tuesday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment and another to four years in jail in the case filed over the attempted murder of renowned writer and Prof Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal. Judge of Sylhet anti-Terrorism Tribunal Nurul Amin Biplob handed down the verdict to Faizul Hasan and his associate Md Shohag Mia this noon.
The court acquitted four others including -- Faizul's father Moulana Atikur Rahman, mother Minara Begum in the verdict, said Public Prosecutor Mominur Rahman Titu -- in the case.
According to the prosecution, on March 3 in 2018 Professor Zafar Iqbal was attacked and injured during an open-air programme on the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology campus in Sylhet. Foyzul was caught red-handed by the students and teachers and was handed over to the police.
Prof Zafar Iqbal was first treated at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and later at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
A case was filed with the Jalalabad Police Station over the incident that same day. Police pressed charges against the six suspects in the case on July 16, 2018. The prosecution and defence completed their arguments in the trial on Mar 22 of this year.
