Jinnat became the first Bangladeshi to win bronze in an international boxing competition
United States-based Bangladeshi boxer Jinnat Ferdous has won a bronze medal in the world famous international women's boxing championship known as the Silesian Open held in Poland. This is the first medal won by a Bangladeshi from the European Boxing Confederation.
A total of 17 countries from Europe, Asia and Africa participated in this tournament, including former Olympic champions.
The 11th International Silesian Women's Boxing Championship was held in Gliwice, Poland. The competition started from September 2 and ended on September 8. 17 countries from Europe, Asia and Africa participated, including former Olympic champions.
Jinnat secured his medal by winning the first match of the quarter-finals. After returning to New York, Jinnat said, 'I won bronze in a tournament in Gliwice, Poland. A Boxing Federation official (Zahir Ahmed) told me, 'This is Bangladesh's first medal from the European Boxing Confederation'.
He participated in two matches in 52 kg weight category. 5-0 victory over Hungary's Kata Papp in the quarter-finals. Defeated in the semi-finals against Ukraine's Daria-Olkha Hutarina but secured the bronze medal.
Jinnat said, '52kg weight class is more than my usual fighting weight. In future tournaments I will compete in the 50kg weight category'.
Note that the International Boxing Association banned headgear in women's boxing in June 2024. So it was the first women's boxing competition without any kind of headgear.
