Jhumon Das granted bail
The High Court today granted one year bail, on condition, to Jhumon Das, who has been in jail for more than six months in a case filed under Digital Security Act (DSA) for criticising Hefajat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque on Facebook.
The HC said in the order that Jhumon Das cannot go out of his home district Sunamganj for the next one year without permission from the lower court concerned. The HC bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol passed the order following a petition filed by Jhumon's mother Nibha Rani Das seeking his bail.
Petitioner's lawyer ZI Khan Panna told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar for Jhumon to get released from Sunamganj jail following the HC order of bail.
Lawyers Tabarak Hossain, Subrata Chowdhury, Nahid Sultana Juthi and Ashraf Ali also appeared for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Yahiya Dulal and Assistant Attorney General Md Mizanur Rahman represented the state.
Appearing for the petitioner, senior lawyer ZI Khan Panna told the HC that Jhuman Das is a patriot not a traitor, as he spoke out against the communal force.
The case should have been filed against those communal forces under DSA, he argued.
