Japan's anti-nuclear organization wins Nobel Peace Prize
The Japanese anti-nuclear organization Nihon Hidankayo won the Nobel Peace Prize this year.
The name of this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner was announced from the Nobel Institute in Oslo, the capital of Norway, at 11:00 a.m. local time today (Bangladesh time: 3:00 p.m.).
The Norwegian Nobel Committee said the prize was awarded to the Japanese organization for its efforts to build a world free of nuclear weapons and to demonstrate through eyewitness testimony that nuclear weapons should never be used again.
Toshiyuki Mimaki, co-head of the organization, became emotional after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. While reacting, he told reporters that he never dreamed that the organization would win the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed by atomic bombs in 1945. According to the BBC report, the Nihon Hidankayo organization was formed in 1956 with the survivors of this attack.
According to the Norwegian Nobel Institute, the number of individuals and organizations nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year was 286. Among them there were 197 persons. And 89 institutions. Finally, an organization has won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Iran's imprisoned human rights activist Nargis Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize last year. She was given this award in recognition of her fight against oppression of women in the country.
