Family members have claimed that at least 176 people are missing after miscreants set fire to Gazi Group's tire manufacturing factory at Rupsi in Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj. As of Monday (August 26) afternoon, 176 people have been listed as missing, said Fire Service and Civil Defense Director (Training) Lt. Col. Rezaul Karim.
He said, 'Relatives are claiming that their family members are missing, who came to this factory during the looting last night.' However, he also mentioned that none of them are factory workers.
It is known that on Sunday (August 25) at 10:35 PM, the fire service rushed to the spot after receiving information about the fire from the locals. 12 units joined each from Dhaka Fulbaria Fire Station, Demra, Kanchpur, Adamji EPZ and Kanchan Fire Station. Narayanganj Industrial Police is also working with fire service people. The factory is still burning in the fire that started around 10:30 pm. At this time, several explosions occurred intermittently, which shook the surrounding area.
Locals say that after the arrest of Golam Dastgir Gazi, the former minister and chairman of Gazi Group, there has been mass looting in the factory. They claimed that several people were trapped inside while looting even when the fire broke out.
Director of Fulbaria Fire Service Rezaul Karim (Training) said that 12 units of fire service are working to control the fire.
