Five militants including Zia sentenced to death
A court has sentenced five militants, including Major Ziaul Haque alias Zia, who was fired from the army, to death and extremist blogger Shafiur Rahman Farabi to life in prison for hacking to death science writer Abhijit Roy six years ago.
Judge Mojibur Rahman of the Dhaka Special Anti-Terrorism Tribunal pronounced the verdict in the case on Tuesday afternoon. The verdict said, "The accused killed Abhijit Roy with the intention of preventing him from expressing his views freely. That is why they deserve the maximum punishment. ”
Among the six accused in the case are Major Ziaul Haque alias Zia, Mozammel Hussain alias Simon alias Shahriar, Abu Siddique Sohail alias Shakib alias Sajid alias Shahab, Arafat Rahman alias Siam alias Sajjad alias Shams alias Hasram alias Hasram. Alias Abdullah was sentenced to death and fined Tk 50,000.
Investigators say they are all members of the banned militant group Ansarullah Bangla.
Another accused, extremist blogger Shafiur Rahman Farabi, has been sentenced to life in prison. Although he was not directly involved in the murder, he was accused in the case of 'inciting the murder' by posting on Facebook. Zia and Akram were shown as fugitives among the accused. The other four accused were present in the court during the verdict.
The lawyers said that although Farabi was a little upset after the verdict, Bati was similarly 'cheerful and arrogant' before and after the verdict. One of them also raised two fingers and showed the ‘V’ sign.
