BIMSTEC hails Bangladesh on graduation to developing nation

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) today congratulated Bangladesh over its graduation to a developing nation from the Least Development Country (LDC). Newly appointed BISTEC Secretary General (SG) Tenzin Lekphell conveyed the congratulation when he paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital. PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the media after the meeting.

The BIMSTEC SG also highly appreciated the government of Sheikh Hasina for its tremendous success in Bangladesh’s sociology-economic development, particularly for successfully tackling the Covid-19 pandemic, under her dynamic leadership. The Prime Minister hoped that the coronavirus situation would further improve in the days to come.

Recalling the contribution of Bhutan to the great War of Liberation with due gratitude, Sheikh Hasina said Bhutan was the first country to recognise Bangladesh’s independence. The new SG of the BIMSTEC, who is a Bhutanese, conveyed greetings of the King and the Prime Minister of his country to the Premier.

The Prime Minister also extended her greetings to the Bhutanese King and the Prime Minister. Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Dr. Ahmad Kaikaus was present.

Tenzin Lekphell from the Kingdom of Bhutan assumed his charges as the secretary general of BIMSTEC on 06 November, 2020. The BIMSTEC is an international organisation of seven nations of South Asia and Southeast Asia, accommodating 1.5 billion people.
