Bangladesh reports highest COVID-19 cases in a single day


Bangladesh today reported 6,469 COVID-19 cases, the highest number in a single day, and it recorded 59 virus deaths, the highest number in over nine months. “The tally of infections has surged to 6,17,764 as 6,469 new cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours,” a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said. A total of 59 COVID-19 patients died in the last 24 hours, second highest fatality as 64 virus deaths were recorded on June 30 last year, increasing the death toll from the pandemic to 9,105.

The country has logged over 5,000 COVID-19 cases for the third consecutive day, the DGHS said, adding 5,181 COVID-19 cases were recorded on March 29, 5,082 on March 30 and 5,358 on March 31 while 6,000 marks virus infection was crossed on Tuesday.

Of the total sample tests in the past 24 hours, 22.94 percent tested positive, while 13.15 percent cases were detected from the total tests conducted so far, the release added.

A total of 28,198 samples were tested at 226 authorized laboratories across the country during the time. The recovery count rose to 5,44,938 after another 2,539 patients were discharged from the hospitals during the period.

Among the total infections, 88.21 percent patients have recovered, while 1.47 percent died so far since the first COVID-19 positive cases were reported in the country on March 8, 2020. During the late winter season, infection rate started decreasing sharply as the country reported 2.30 percent coronavirus positive cases on February 8 this year while the figure has surged significantly in recent times.

According to month-wise data of COVID-19 positive cases last year, a total of 51 COVID-19 positive cases were detected in March, 7616 in April, 39,486 in May, 98,330 in June, 92,178 in July, 75,335 in August, 50,483 in September, 44, 205 in October, 57,248 in November and 48,578 in December. The month-wise data of coronavirus positive cases this year, 21,629 were recorded in January, 11,077 in February and 65,079 in March.

Among the 59 deaths, 35 are male and 24 female, the press release said, adding one is in his 20s, four are in their 30s, 11 in their 40s, 13 in their 50s while 30 are above 60 years. According to the division-wise data, 40 deaths took place in Dhaka Division.

Among the total 9,105 fatalities, 5,192 deaths occurred in Dhaka division,1,645 in Chattogram division, 506 in Rajshahi division, 586 in Khulna division, 274 in Barishal division, 325 in Sylhet division, 376 in Rangpur division and 201 in Mymensingh division, according to the press release.

A total of 46,98,774 samples have so far been tested since the detection of the first COVID-19 cases in the country. The DGHS said in order to make treatment facilities easily available for the COVID-19 patients, the government has introduced telemedicine services comprising 100 physicians for round the clock in the country.

It added that 2,68,98,977 people received healthcare services from hotline mobile numbers and health web portals as the government formed a group of medical professionals to provide emergency healthcare services.

As of April 01, 2021, 10:56 GMT, 2,830,724 people have died so far from the COVID-19 outbreak and there are currently 129,606,379 confirmed cases in 212 countries and territories, according to Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics.
